When the roof leaks…

…you shovel off the snow (ice damming). That’s exactly what I did with a couple of contractors yesterday up in Baltimore at my parent’s house. Where does all that snow go? Not very far it turns out. I am guessing it will be gone by mid April!!

The Big DC Snow and a Trip to the Hudson River Valley

This past week I traveled with a photographer assisting him in some work up in the Albany, NY area. As our work wound down, the first big storm his back home. I stayed away traveling to NYC for the weekend before returning home on Sunday to shovel out. Today even more snow piled on top. Just amazing how much material is sitting on the ground right now. I hope it melts very slowly!

Enjoy the pix.

Camp Rock Enon

Last weekend I joined my son and little brother for a little camping with their boy scout troop. We traveled about 90 minutes to Camp Rock Enon, a BSA Camp located near Gore, VA. The camp-out was a combined winter camping/cooking theme. We cooked lunch, dinner and breakfast the following morning and had a great time just hanging out in between, lighting fires, digging holes, trying the obstacle course, and chopping wood. It’s a guy thing ;-)

The adults had some really wonderful stuff to eat. And many thanks to the ladies who did the cooking on this trip (grub masters, although the term seems wrong given the quality of the meals). Chicken fettuccine, Monty Christos, Potato Home Fries, cobbler, cinamon (monkey) bread and more. Best food I ever had :-)

Below are some pictures from the trip. I really enjoyed some of the spider web shots from the morning. We had a very heavy dew that actually started around 4pm the day before! And everything was covered in it by morning.

All of these were shot with my new Canon S90 pocket camera which is a great machine for these type of trips.

Walk in the Woods (part II)

Here are some shots my son took on our walk. Some pretty cool stuff actually. He even took the time to edit them in iPhoto and add some contrast, toning and more. I think he liked the results.

A Lazy Walk in the Woods

I took the kids and Rylan over to Great Falls last week. My idea was to give each kid a camera and see if they took some fun shots. I was also trying to get Jake to start playing around with his “new” laptop (my old one). He is pretty good with computers but mostly uses them for YouTube and other video/TV watching.

So we went down with the dog and everyone and did some shooting. Everyone had a straight 50 or 55mm lens on an DSLR to keep things simple. (no lens tricks) I plan to post some of Jake and Anna’s shots as soon as they finalize what they like. But for now, here are a few of mine.

Update: As promised, here are some that Jake took.

Making of a Wine Stopper

Shot with an iPhone 3GS and editted with iMovie HD. I wish I had had shot more of the cutting of the shape of the wood, but this will have to wait till the next time. Click below for the video.

Wisdom by Andrew Zuckerman

Something for the holiday list me thinks. Big beautiful portraits. The site is worth a visit for sure. I love the Henry Kissinger image on page 12 (at the site…book link). Excellent.

Great Falls Flooding – Tomorrow

If you have not seen great falls during a flood, you haven’t seen great falls. If you have time to make a trip on Wednesday, go. Although the river will not be at a record, with the amount of rain we have had recently, it is predicted that the river will crest just a foot and a half below flood stage.

I like to go in the early morning when you get some nice back lighting on the VA side. The standing waves and mist are powerful.
